RADAR TULUNGAGUNG – The Indonesian Proclamation of Independence 1945 was not a sudden event. Behind the historic declaration on August 17, 1945, there was a series of crucial global and national events that accelerated Indonesia’s path toward independence.

In the closing days of World War II, the global situation changed dramatically. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945, became a turning point. The attack, carried out by Allied forces, shocked the world and severely weakened Japan’s position. Just three days later, the second atomic bomb hit Nagasaki bombing, further pushing Japan toward surrender.

These global developments directly influenced Indonesia. On August 7, 1945, Japan formed the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI), led by Sukarno. This step reflected Japan’s increasing willingness to grant independence, although still under its supervision.

Japan’s Surrender Opens Opportunity

The situation escalated rapidly. On August 12, 1945, Japanese Marshal Terauchi informed Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, and Radjiman Wedyodiningrat that Indonesia would soon gain independence. This announcement raised hope among Indonesian leaders.

On August 14, 1945, Japan officially surrendered to the Allies. Emperor Hirohito announced the surrender via national radio. This marked the end of World War II in Asia and created a power vacuum across occupied territories, including Indonesia.

Rengasdengklok Incident and Youth Pressure

Despite the situation, differences emerged between older leaders and younger activists. The youth groups demanded an immediate declaration of independence without waiting for Japan’s approval.

This led to the historic Rengasdengklok Incident on August 15, 1945. Sukarno and Hatta were taken to Rengasdengklok to distance them from Japanese influence and to push for a swift proclamation. The incident highlighted the urgency felt by younger nationalists.

Drafting the Proclamation Text

After returning to Jakarta on August 16, 1945, Sukarno and Hatta immediately prepared the proclamation text. They gathered at the residence of Admiral Maeda, a Japanese officer who supported Indonesia’s independence efforts.

The drafting involved key figures such as Ahmad Subardjo, while Sayuti Melik typed the final version. This document would soon become a cornerstone in Indonesian history.

The Historic Declaration

On August 17, 1945, at Jalan Pegangsaan Timur No. 56, Sukarno officially read the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence. The red-and-white flag was raised, marking the birth of an independent nation.

A Chain of Defining Events

The events leading to the Indonesian Proclamation of Independence 1945 demonstrate how global conflict and local resistance were closely connected. The atomic bombings weakened Japan, its surrender created an opportunity, and Indonesian leaders acted decisively.

Each moment, from Hiroshima to Rengasdengklok, played a vital role in shaping Indonesia’s independence. These milestones remain important reminders of struggle, sacrifice, and national unity.
