RADAR TULUNGAGUNG – Indonesia’s Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 is nearing full capacity as the government intensifies preparations for one of the country’s biggest annual travel waves ahead of Lebaran.

The Ministry of Transportation launched the Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 again this year and placed it at the center of its strategy to reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety during the holiday season. Officials expect the initiative to help millions of travelers choose public transportation instead of private vehicles.

Data from the Directorate General of Land Transportation shows that the Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 comes as around 143 million people may travel during the 2026 Eid holiday period. That figure reflects a massive increase in mobility and pushes authorities to strengthen transport planning earlier across key travel corridors.

Public Demand for Free Travel Surges Ahead of Eid

The ministry reported that public enthusiasm for the Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 has risen sharply. Officials said travelers have already taken about 90 percent of the available quota prepared by the Ministry of Transportation.

This high participation rate shows that many people now prefer organized transport because it offers lower costs and safer travel conditions.

Officials also noted that other institutions continue to support the national program. State-owned enterprises, private companies, and local governments have opened additional free homecoming services in several regions.

Their involvement expands the total travel capacity and gives more people access to affordable transportation before Eid.

Government Deploys 3,000 Buses Across Major Routes

The land transportation sector remains the largest part of the free travel program. Authorities have prepared around 3,000 buses to serve major routes linking urban centers with regional destinations.

These buses will operate on strategic corridors where traffic usually peaks during the homecoming season.

The government wants more travelers to leave their motorcycles at home and switch to buses for long-distance trips. Officials repeatedly warn that motorcycles carry higher accident risks, especially when families travel with children and luggage.

Long journeys on crowded roads often increase fatigue and reduce safety for riders.

Because of that, the ministry continues to position the Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 as both a traffic solution and a public safety measure.

Train and Ship Services Strengthen National Transport Capacity

The ministry also expanded the program through railway and sea transportation services. Train travel remains one of the most popular choices because passengers value punctual departures and stable schedules.

Rail operators expect strong demand on routes connecting major cities across Java during the holiday period.

Sea transport also plays a crucial role, especially for travelers moving between islands. Ferry and ship services support routes that connect Java with eastern Indonesia and several outer provinces.

Officials continue coordinating port operations to prevent long queues during peak departure days.

Safer Mass Transportation Becomes Main Priority

Transportation officials stressed that the government designed the free homecoming program mainly to protect travelers during Lebaran.

Mass transportation gives authorities better control over schedules, passenger capacity, and operational safety. It also helps reduce the number of private vehicles entering crowded roads at the same time.

Officials believe this approach can lower accident rates and improve traffic flow on national highways.

In previous years, many travelers still relied on motorcycles despite repeated safety warnings. This year, authorities hope wider free transport access will change that pattern.

Lebaran Travel Wave Expected to Peak Again

The projected 143 million movements confirm that Lebaran remains Indonesia’s largest annual migration event. The figure includes departures before Eid as well as return travel after the holiday ends.

Transportation planners believe early registration enthusiasm indicates that public awareness of safer travel alternatives continues to grow.

As remaining quotas continue to shrink, officials encourage travelers to monitor official announcements from transport providers and participating institutions offering free travel services.

The government expects the Free Eid Homecoming Program 2026 to play a central role in keeping traffic more manageable while helping millions of Indonesians reach their hometowns safely during Lebaran.
