BLITAR – Blitar prison extortion case is expanding, as Indonesia’s Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) intensifies its probe into alleged illegal levies inside a local prison.

Investigators from the Internal Compliance Unit (Patnal) visited Class IIB Blitar Prison to conduct follow-up questioning on May 3. The team examined additional witnesses to gather more details and strengthen the case.

This latest round of questioning went beyond the three officers previously removed from duty. Investigators also questioned six new witnesses, including four security staff and two inmates. Officials see these testimonies as key to clarifying how the alleged scheme operated.

Blitar Prison chief Iswandi confirmed the ongoing investigation. He said the questioning formed part of standard procedures to complete the fact-finding process. “The Patnal team conducted the examination here. They questioned several staff members and inmates,” he said.

Meanwhile, three officers suspected of involvement remain under examination at the East Java regional office in Surabaya. They include a security chief identified as ADK and two officers identified as RJ and W. Authorities have not yet announced further developments regarding their legal or disciplinary status.

The case initially emerged after three inmates filed complaints on April 23. They alleged that prison staff demanded money in exchange for certain privileges. According to reports, the total payments reached Rp 60 million.

The alleged payments reportedly linked to extended access for evening prayers at the mosque and transfers to a specific housing block. Investigators are now working to verify these claims and identify all parties involved.

Earlier, East Java corrections officials took immediate action by suspending the suspected officers. They also proposed severe disciplinary sanctions to the central authority, which holds the final decision.

Acting regional corrections head Ulin Nuha stressed the agency’s firm stance on misconduct. He emphasized that authorities will act decisively against violations that harm institutional integrity. “We remain committed to taking strict action. There is no tolerance,” he said.

At the same time, the investigation continues as central authorities review evidence and testimonies. Officials aim to ensure accountability and prevent similar practices in correctional facilities across the region.
