RADAR BLITAR – A Blitar river drowning victim who had been missing for five days was found dead on Sunday after strong currents swept her away, local disaster officials said.
The victim, 72-year-old Sumarti, a resident of Panggungrejo hamlet in Kademangan district, disappeared on Wednesday afternoon while attempting to cross a river during heavy rain. Authorities believe she slipped and rising floodwaters carried her downstream.
“River discharge surged due to intense rainfall, creating powerful currents. The victim likely lost footing and the current dragged her away before she could save herself,” said Wahyudi, head of the Blitar Disaster Management Agency.
Search teams found Sumarti’s body at 10:44 a.m. on the fifth day of operations, about 15.3 kilometers downstream from the incident site. Residents had reported signs of a body along the river, prompting teams to search the area.
Rescuers confirmed her identity after evacuation despite difficult terrain and strong currents. They transported the remains to RSUD Mardi Waluyo before returning them to the family.
The joint search-and-rescue mission involved Basarnas, the Blitar Disaster Management Agency, military and police personnel, the Indonesian Red Cross, volunteers, and local residents. Authorities closed the operation after the recovery.
Officials urged residents to avoid crossing rivers during heavy rain, warning that sudden water surges can quickly become dangerous. “Do not force crossings when water levels rise. Safety must come first,” Wahyudi said.
