BLITAR – The Istana Gebang renovation has officially begin in Blitar, with Rp 6.5 billion committed to restore the childhood home of Indonesia’s founding president, Sukarno. The project aims to revive the historical landmark and reinforce its role as a key heritage tourism icon.

The Blitar City Government and the East Java chapter of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) are jointly overseeing the restoration. According to party officials, they initiated the project after reviewing the building’s deteriorating condition.

PDIP East Java Deputy Chair Budi Sulistyono Kanang said the party advanced Rp 6.5 billion to fund the Istana Gebang renovation. He stressed that the initiative reflects concern over the site’s preservation.

“We want to restore its original function and historical value. More importantly, we want Istana Gebang to stand as a true icon of Blitar,” Kanang said Monday.

Furthermore, PDIP Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri personally approved the renovation plan. She also offered specific guidance on the statue of Sukarno within the complex.

Kanang said Megawati requested that the statue’s design mirror the Sukarno monument at the Ministry of Defense in Jakarta. Therefore, planners will adjust the design to align with her recommendation.

Because the property belongs to the Blitar City Government, PDIP coordinated closely with Mayor Syauqul Muhibbin before starting construction. After securing his approval, the team began renovation work.

“We received the mayor’s permission, so the renovation has started. We hope to restore the main house and garden to their original condition,” Kanang said.

In addition, the renovation focuses on preserving the authenticity of the main residence and its surrounding garden. Officials believe careful restoration will strengthen Blitar’s position as a destination for historical tourism.

For years, Istana Gebang has drawn visitors interested in Sukarno’s early life. However, officials felt the building needed better maintenance to remain competitive as a national heritage site.

Now, through the Istana Gebang renovation, local leaders aim to protect its legacy while improving visitor experience. Theyhope the restored landmark will serve future generations and elevate Blitar’s cultural profile.
