TULUNGAGUNG – The Tulungagung Prison visitation policy has come under public attention after officials denied rumors of strict visit restrictions. Authorities at Class IIB Tulungagung Prison confirmed they have not limited visits to nuclear family members only and continue to promote a more humane approach.

Rizal Arbi Fanani, Head of Inmate Development and Work Activities, said the prison still follows its existing visitation rules. Under the policy, not only immediate family but also friends and extended relatives can visit inmates.

“We have not introduced any new restrictions. Visitors beyond the nuclear family remain allowed,” he said.

He explained that the policy aims to support the psychological well-being of inmates. The facility currently houses 607 inmates, and broader social interaction helps reduce stress levels.

“One way to reduce stress is to allow inmates to meet family members and people close to them,” he added.

The prison has also strengthened its humane approach by allowing face-to-face visits without physical barriers. Previously, inmates and visitors interacted through bars or grilles. Now, visits take place in the more open Al-Fath Hall, which offers a more comfortable environment.

According to Rizal, inmates have responded positively to the change. They can interact more freely, including shaking hands and holding direct conversations without obstruction.

“Direct interaction allows them to express their concerns more openly,” he said.

Despite the relaxed approach, prison authorities continue to enforce strict security measures. Officers screen every visitor and their belongings through a two-layer inspection system to prevent prohibited items from entering the facility.

Security staff conduct thorough checks on both personal items and visitors’ bodies. They also carry out additional inspections before visitors enter residential blocks to ensure safety remains intact.

“We ensure all procedures go through strict checks to maintain a safe and controlled environment,” Rizal stressed.

Officials believe the humane visitation policy has contributed positively to internal security. Strong social support from family and close contacts helps maintain inmates’ mental stability, which in turn reduces the risk of conflict inside the prison.

“Psychological stability plays a crucial role. When it is maintained, security conditions remain conducive,” he concluded.
