TULUNGAGUNG – Authorities in Tulungagung have begun installing alternative route signs as preparations intensify for the closure of the Gondang 1 Bridge in East Java. The bridge replacement project will affect traffic between Tulungagung and Trenggalek, two busy regional hubs connected by a major road corridor.
Officials started placing the signs on Monday at several strategic intersections across Tulungagung. The new signs aim to guide motorists during the upcoming traffic diversion and reduce confusion once the bridge closes for construction work.
The Tulungagung Transportation Agency said crews focused on national roads and district roads that will function as the main diversion routes. Drivers who normally use the Gondang 1 Bridge will later follow these alternative roads during the replacement project.
Ferdy Iswahyudi, acting head of traffic management at the Tulungagung Transportation Agency, said the East Java-Bali National Road Agency, known locally as BBPJN Jawa Timur-Bali, is handling the installation process.
“We started installing the signs on Monday. Workers are placing them gradually at intersections connected to the alternative routes,” Ferdy said.
Local authorities continue to monitor road conditions before they implement the full traffic engineering plan. Officers are checking traffic signs, road access, and vehicle capacity along the diversion routes. They also want to ensure smooth traffic flow during the bridge closure period.
The Gondang 1 Bridge serves as an important connection between Tulungagung and Trenggalek. Thousands of motorists use the route every day for business activities, logistics, and regional travel. Officials expect the bridge replacement project to create temporary congestion, especially during peak travel hours.
To reduce disruption, transportation officials want drivers to recognize the diversion routes before the closure begins. Ferdy said the government targets full installation of all traffic signs no later than one day before authorities activate the traffic diversion system.
Authorities have not announced the exact closure schedule for the Gondang 1 Bridge. Officials are still discussing the final timeline with project contractors. The closure could begin on Friday morning, afternoon, or evening.
“We are still waiting for final confirmation regarding the schedule. After we receive the decision, we will immediately inform the public,” Ferdy said.
The bridge replacement project forms part of broader infrastructure improvements in East Java. Local authorities expect the project to improve road safety and strengthen regional connectivity after construction finishes.
