TRENGGALEK – Police have named a suspect in the Trenggalek assault case after a video showing violence against a woman went viral on social media.

Trenggalek Police investigators identified AW, 31, as the suspect. The victim, DW, 33, reportedly had an unregistered or siri marriage with him.

Trenggalek Police Criminal Investigation Chief Eko Widiantoro said investigators named AW after gathering witness statements and other evidence.

“Investigators have collected sufficient evidence and named AW as a suspect in the assault against DW,” Eko said Monday.

The case drew public attention after a 44-second video showing the abuse circulated widely on social media.

Police said the violence happened in two locations. The first incident occurred in Jati Village, Karangan District. The second took place on a roadside in Karanganyar Village, Pule District.

Investigators questioned several witnesses during the probe. One of them recorded the video that later spread online.

Doctors who examined the victim found bruises on her head and arms. The injuries likely came from repeated blows.

Police have detained AW and charged him under Article 466 paragraph 1 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code, Eko said.

Investigators also found that the victim had consumed Gramoxone herbicide poison after a prolonged dispute with the suspect.

Police said the couple had a religious but unregistered marriage, commonly called nikah siri. Because the marriage lacks legal status, authorities do not classify the case as domestic violence.

Investigators believe several disputes triggered the conflict between the two.

One issue involved their plan to legalize the marriage. Another concerned allegations that the victim took a mobile phone belonging to her employer.

The victim worked as a caregiver for an elderly person in Kedungsigit Village, Karangan District.

Police said the suspect later picked up the victim in Tulungagung after learning where she was.

During the trip back to Trenggalek, the couple argued. The argument later escalated into violence.

Investigators believe the suspect assaulted the victim twice during the journey. The first assault happened in Karangan District. The second occurred in Karanganyar Village, Pule District.

Medical findings show injuries on the victim’s head and arms. Investigators believe the suspect used a wooden block and sandals during the assault.

However, police have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the victim’s death.

Forensic doctors at Bhayangkara Hospital in Kediri are currently conducting an autopsy.

“We must determine whether the assault or the poison caused the victim’s death,” Eko said.
