TULUNGAGUNG – Gondang Bridge traffic diversion plan is now in effect following the closure of a major provincial route linking Tulungagung and Trenggalek. Local authorities have introduced several alternative routes to reduce disruption and maintain traffic flow during the bridge reconstruction project.

Police initially scheduled the road closure for May 25. However, project contractors delayed the demolition because heavy equipment had not yet arrived at the site.

Tulungagung Traffic Police Chief AKP M. Taufik Nabila said the delay coincided with a long public holiday. As a result, traffic conditions remained manageable and authorities faced fewer challenges in maintaining road safety.

“Fortunately, the postponement occurred during a long holiday period, which helped support both traffic management and public safety,” Taufik said.

Following the official closure of the Tulungagung–Trenggalek provincial road corridor, the Tulungagung Traffic Police and the local Transportation Agency implemented a series of traffic engineering measures. The goal is to prevent congestion and ensure smooth vehicle movement throughout the construction period.

Authorities have designated three alternative routes for motorcycles and private passenger vehicles. Officials believe these roads can accommodate daily traffic volumes while minimizing travel disruptions.

The first route connects Gondang Three-Way Intersection with Jetakan Three-Way Intersection. The second route runs from Mojoarum Three-Way Intersection to Jetakan Three-Way Intersection. Meanwhile, the third route links Malasan Three-Way Intersection in Durenan District, Trenggalek, with Gempolan Four-Way Intersection in Pakel District.

Traffic officers have installed guidance measures to help drivers navigate the alternative corridors. Authorities also continue to monitor vehicle movement to prevent bottlenecks.

However, the alternative roads are not open to heavy vehicles. Trucks with six wheels or more, including medium-duty cargo trucks, cannot use residential roads or neighborhood streets included in the diversion plan.

Officials introduced the restriction to protect local road infrastructure. In addition, authorities want to reduce vibrations that could affect residential areas along the diversion routes.

According to Taufik, heavy vehicles must follow a separate route through Durenan, Bandung, Pakel, Campurdarat, and Boyolangu before exiting at the Tamanan intersection.

“Vehicles with six wheels or more must use the designated route. If heavy trucks enter restricted alternative roads, officers will take enforcement action,” he said.

Authorities expect the traffic diversion system to remain in place throughout the reconstruction of Gondang Bridge. The project forms part of a broader effort to improve transportation safety and replace aging infrastructure on one of the region’s busiest road connections.

While the closure may extend travel times for some motorists, officials believe the temporary measures will help maintain safety and traffic efficiency until the new bridge becomes operational.
