RADAR BLITAR – Local authorities in Blitar, East Java, are preparing a major tourism development plan for Blumbang Gede Lake. The natural attraction currently draws visitors only during special events. However, officials believe its scenic landscape could support year-round tourism.

The lake lies within plantation land in Soso Village. It spans about four hectares and features calm waters surrounded by greenery. Therefore, the Blitar Culture and Tourism Office sees strong potential for water-based recreation.

“Blumbang Gede has extraordinary potential. Not every region has a lake like this. The scenery is excellent and very suitable for water tourism,” said Eko Susanto, head of Blitar’s tourism agency.

The Blitar regency government plans to transform Blumbang Gede into a flagship natural tourism destination. As part of this vision, planners propose integrated facilities across the lakeside area. These include parking areas, small-business zones, and visitor amenities.

In addition, the lake could host various water activities. Officials have identified canoeing, paddle boating, rowing, and even jet skiing as possible attractions. However, the site first requires supporting infrastructure such as docks and equipment storage.

Beyond water sports, the area also offers potential for camping grounds and fishing zones. Consequently, visitors could enjoy a wider range of outdoor activities in one location. Authorities expect this integrated concept to enhance visitor experience and extend stays.

Eko noted that the lake previously served mainly for water-sports training, especially rowing. Nevertheless, it also suits beginner-level recreation. With proper safety gear such as life jackets, the water activities would remain safe even for children.

Despite strong potential, the project requires significant investment. Meanwhile, regional budgets remain limited following national spending-efficiency policies. Therefore, the government is seeking private partners to accelerate development.

“We must be smart in finding investment. The local government does not have to manage everything alone. Cooperation with third parties is possible,” Eko said.

Authorities ultimately hope Blumbang Gede will become a new water-tourism icon in Blitar. Once developed, the lake could attract consistent visitor flows rather than event-based crowds.
