BLITAR – The electric pedicab program in Blitar Regency has reached its final stage. A total of 200 traditional pedicab drivers completed mandatory training before receiving their new vehicles. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto personally funds the initiative. Officials have scheduled the handover for March 7.
Authorities held the training on Tuesday (March 3) at Pendapa Sasana Adhi Praja in Kanigoro, the administrative center of Blitar Regency.
During the session, Blitar Transportation Agency head Puguh Imam Susanto required all beneficiaries to attend the session. Instructors from PT Pindad led the technical briefing. They explained vehicle operations and safety procedures.
“We want the drivers to feel confident when operating the electric pedicabs,” Puguh said. “This way, they will understand the new system.”
Organizers designed the program as a one-day practical session. As part of the training, participants rode the electric pedicabs around the Blitar Regent’s Office complex. They tested acceleration, braking, and steering controls.
Local officials stressed that the program does not use state budget funds. President Prabowo financed the vehicles with his personal funds, they said.
Because of this funding structure, the regional government did not handle procurement. However, officials verified beneficiary data and coordinated logistics to support the rollout.
Ratna Dewi Nirwana Sari, deputy chair of the Gerindra Party’s Blitar branch, confirmed that authorities selected verified local residents who work as professional pedicab drivers.
“The beneficiaries are genuine pedicab drivers from Blitar Regency,” she said. “We applied strict criteria to ensure the aid reaches the right people.”
The regional government proposed 50 names. Meanwhile, the Gerindra Party recommended 150 candidates. Officials verified each applicant’s occupation before finalizing the list.
Before the handover, trainers also taught drivers how to charge the electric token system.
Local authorities may launch a second distribution phase after completing the first rollout.
The program supports efforts to modernize traditional transport. It also aims to help low-income workers through cleaner mobility solutions.
