BLITAR – A volunteer traffic helper continues to manage vehicle flow at a busy intersection on Sudanco Supriyadi Street in Blitar City, where congestion often builds during peak hours.

Prayitno, known locally as one of the informal “polisi cepek,” spends his time directing motorists at the crossroads in Sananwetan District. Although he holds no official authority, many drivers rely on his presence when traffic becomes difficult.

Every day, he stands near the intersection and signals vehicles to pass safely. As traffic increases, his role becomes more noticeable, especially when roads begin to slow down.

“I come here every day just to help arrange traffic so it does not get stuck and vehicles can move smoothly,” Prayitno said.

He explained that he receives no fixed payment for the work. Instead, he depends entirely on voluntary contributions from passing drivers.

“If calculated, I earn around Rp 100,000 in a week. Still, that amount is never certain because it depends on how many vehicles pass,” he said.

According to Prayitno, his income changes with traffic conditions. For example, earnings usually rise during busy holiday periods.

Before Eid, he said, more vehicles passed through the intersection and drivers gave more often than on regular days. Even then, the increase usually lasts only until the return-travel period ends.

“When traffic becomes crowded like before the holiday, income usually rises and continues until after the holiday return flow,” said the Bendogerit resident.

Despite the uncertainty, he continues the work willingly. At the same time, he sees it as a practical way to add income for daily needs.

He usually appears on the street only during busy moments. Besides holiday traffic, city government events also create opportunities for him to help regulate vehicles.

“I just accept whatever comes. At least, it helps cover small daily needs,” he said.

For many motorists, the presence of volunteer traffic helpers like Prayitno remains useful, especially at intersections where congestion often forms quickly.
