TRENGGALEK – The Gondang Bridge revitalization project in Tulungagung has officially been delayed, prompting authorities in neighboring Trenggalek Regency to prepare traffic diversion plans and public transport adjustments.
Officials had initially scheduled the bridge reconstruction to begin on May 25, 2026. However, authorities later moved the project timeline to May 29, with construction expected to continue until November 30, 2026.
The bridge closure will affect traffic between Tulungagung and Trenggalek. Therefore, the Trenggalek government has started preparing traffic engineering measures to reduce congestion during construction.
The Trenggalek Housing, Settlement, and Transportation Agency, known locally as Disperkimhub, is leading the traffic management preparations.
Mahendra, head of the agency’s traffic division, said officials would prioritize alternative routes for large vehicles such as buses and heavy trucks.
Under the new traffic plan, large vehicles will pass through the Durenan intersection before heading south toward Bandung District. Drivers will then continue east before returning to Tulungagung through Boyolangu.
“For large vehicles with six wheels or more, the route will go from the Durenan intersection to the south, then through Bandung before returning to Tulungagung,” Mahendra said.
Meanwhile, motorcycle riders and private car drivers can still use several smaller roads near the bridge area.
Officials have also prepared the Durenan Type C Terminal as a temporary transit point and rest area for passengers. Bus operators do not need to enter the terminal. However, transport officers will coordinate with bus crews if passengers wait there.
“Buses do not need to enter the terminal, but our officers will direct bus crews to pick up passengers there if necessary,” a transportation official said.
In addition, authorities urged residents and public transport users to adjust their travel schedules. Detour routes will likely increase travel time during the project period.
Disperkimhub will also install information boards along alternative roads. Furthermore, officials will share traffic updates through social media to help residents understand the new routes.
Authorities hope the preparations will reduce disruption once the Gondang Bridge revitalization project starts later this week.
The bridge reconstruction aims to improve long-term transportation access in the region. Even so, residents and transport operators may still face delays and congestion during the six-month project.
