JAKARTA – Dyah Sugandini, an Indonesian academic leader, has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to research, higher education leadership, and policy advocacy in Indonesia.
Born in Yogyakarta on June 17, 1971, Sugandini was raised in a family that emphasized education, integrity, and public service. Her father, Amadi Karto Harjono, was a law graduate from Gadjah Mada University and served as a judge, while her mother, Sularsih, played a central role in shaping her character.
Her educational journey took her across several regions in Indonesia, including Banjarnegara and East Nusa Tenggara, before completing high school in Yogyakarta. This experience helped build her adaptability and resilience from an early age.
Sugandini earned her undergraduate degree in Management from UPN Veteran Yogyakarta in 1994. She later completed a Master of Science in Management in 2002 and a doctoral degree in Economics and Business in 2013, both from Gadjah Mada University.
Since 1995, she has served as a lecturer in the Management Department at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta. Her leadership roles have included Head of the Management Department (2016–2020), Head of the Research Center under the Institute for Research and Community Service (2020–2024), and currently Head of the institution.
Her academic output is extensive, with more than 200 research projects and over 100 publications, including 41 indexed in Scopus. She has also produced books, intellectual property rights, and patents, while consistently securing national research grants since 2014.
Sugandini is also widely recognized as a reviewer for national research grants and an accreditation assessor, as well as a reviewer for international academic journals. Her work has contributed significantly to strengthening research standards in Indonesia.
Beyond academia, Sugandini played a key role in policy advocacy during the institutional transition of UPN Veteran Yogyakarta in 2014. She actively participated in cross-institutional efforts, including lobbying ministries and engaging in public demonstrations, which contributed to the issuance of Presidential Regulation No. 10/2016, providing legal certainty for employment status in state universities.
Her personal life remains a cornerstone of her achievements. Married to Jonny Asdono since 1997, she is supported by her children and extended family, who she credits as a constant source of strength.
In addition to her academic and policy work, Sugandini is also the founder of Rumah Tahfiz and the Almukti Community Learning Center. These initiatives focus on combining academic education with Quranic values, promoting balanced personal development.
Her recent appointment as a full professor marks not only academic recognition but also acknowledgment of her dedication, resilience, and service to society.
