JAKARTA – Petroleum engineering expert Herianto has emerged as one of Indonesia’s most respected academics, with a career spanning decades in both education and the oil and gas industry.
Born on June 21, 1959, in Pekanbaru, Riau, Prof. Dr. Ir. Drs. Herianto, MT, built his academic foundation at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN) Veteran Yogyakarta. He first earned a diploma in petroleum engineering in 1983, followed by an engineering degree in 1989.
His academic journey continued across leading Indonesian institutions. He obtained a doctoral-level qualification from Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Faculty of Philosophy in 1992 and later completed a Master of Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung in 1994. In 2008, he earned a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, further strengthening his international credentials.
Herianto has dedicated his professional life to academia since 1986, serving as a lecturer at the Faculty of Mineral Technology at UPN Veteran Yogyakarta. Over the years, he has supervised more than 300 undergraduate students, many of whom have gone on to hold senior roles in the oil and gas sector.
“I truly enjoy teaching. Being around students keeps me young,” he said, expressing pride in seeing his former students succeed as industry leaders.
Beyond teaching, Herianto has held key academic leadership roles, including Head of Laboratory and Chair of the Petroleum Engineering Department. His influence extends beyond campus, as he has also worked as an instructor, consultant, and technical expert for various oil and gas companies, particularly in drilling operations and well integrity.
His academic contributions include more than 35 scientific publications in reputable journals, reflecting his commitment to research and innovation in petroleum engineering. He has also been recognized with multiple awards, including honors from the President of Indonesia for 10, 20, and 30 years of public service.
Herianto’s personal life reflects the same dedication. He has been married to Erna Wijayanti for over three decades, with their family serving as a foundation for his achievements. Their children have followed in his footsteps, pursuing careers in the oil and gas industry.
Colleagues and students describe Herianto as a mentor who treats his students like family, guiding them not only academically but also in character and ambition. He believes the younger generation plays a crucial role in advancing Indonesia’s energy sector.
He continues to encourage young lecturers to pursue academic excellence early, emphasizing the importance of professionalism in strengthening Indonesia’s education system and petroleum engineering field.
