TULUNGAGUNG – The school bus program in Tulungagung is being expanded as authorities respond to rising student traffic accidents. Officials see the initiative as a safer transport solution and a way to reduce road risks among young commuters.

Iswahjudi, head of the Tulungagung Transportation Agency (Dishub), said private motorcycle use among students remains a key factor behind the high accident rate. Therefore, the agency is pushing to maximize school bus services across key education routes. “We continue to take steps to reduce accidents involving students. One solution is to optimize school bus services,” he said.

According to Iswahjudi, school buses offer a safer alternative, especially for students who do not receive daily rides from their parents. In addition, the program can ease traffic congestion, which often worsens due to the high number of student motorcycles on the road.

He stressed that the initiative serves as a preventive measure to reduce risks early. At the same time, he warned students without driving licenses not to ride motorcycles to school. “Students who do not have a valid license should not force themselves to ride. Use the school buses that are already available,” he said.

Currently, Dishub operates eight school buses, one Elf minibus, and 33 public passenger vehicles (MPU) to support student mobility in Tulungagung. Although the fleet remains limited, authorities continue to optimize routes and services.

Meanwhile, the local government is also seeking partnerships to strengthen road safety programs. For instance, Dishub is working with the Indonesian National Police to intensify traffic safety education in schools. This effort aims to build awareness and discipline among students from an early age.

“We will intensify outreach with the police so students better understand traffic rules and stay disciplined on the road,” Iswahjudi said.

He also urged licensed student drivers to obey traffic signs and remain focused while driving. “Discipline on the road is key. With stronger compliance, we hope to reduce student accident rates in Tulungagung,” he concluded.
