TULUNGAGUNG – Eid culinary destinations in Tulungagung once again draw large numbers of homecoming travelers as several long-standing food spots stay open while many restaurants close during the holiday.
For many returning residents, finding food on Eid day often becomes difficult because most eateries close for family celebrations.
That is why several local culinary icons continue serving residents and travelers who arrive from outside the region.
One of the busiest places is Sate Kambing Pak Kuwat, a well-known grilled goat satay stall with a loyal customer base.
The smell of grilled meat spreads from early morning as visitors arrive in steady numbers throughout the day.
“Satay here is legendary. The meat is tender and the seasoning goes deep into the meat,” said Ahmad, a regular customer.
For many travelers returning home, the stall has become part of their annual Eid routine.
Rina, who returns to Tulungagung every year, said she always visits the stall soon after arriving.
“Every time I come home, this is my first stop because it always stays open when many places are closed,” she said.
Parking attendant Suryo said visitor numbers usually rise sharply during Eid.
He noted that many out-of-town travelers come with large family groups.
“Many homecoming travelers from outside the city stop here with their relatives,” he said.
Nearby resident Slamet added that long vehicle lines become a familiar sight every holiday season.
He said traffic often starts building in the morning and continues through the afternoon.
At night, the culinary search continues in the Jepun area, where Nasi Pecel Ibe attracts customers looking for late meals.
The modest food stall remains popular because it stays open until early morning, even during Eid.
Its thick peanut sauce and sweet-spicy flavor attract many night visitors.
“The seasoning is excellent and finding food at one in the morning during Eid is difficult,” said customer Fahmi.
Local resident Rahman said the Jepun area remains active late at night, especially around pecel stalls.
He added that the area rarely loses visitors during the holiday.
No discussion of Tulungagung’s Eid food tradition is complete without ayam lodho, a signature local dish that often appears at family gatherings.
Cooks grill free-range chicken over charcoal first, then simmer it in spicy coconut milk with local spices.
That process creates tender meat and a smoky flavor that many families associate with Lebaran meals.
Families usually serve the dish with savory rice or ketupat, adding a strong traditional touch to Eid celebrations across Tulungagung.
