RADAR BLITAR – Authorities in Blitar, East Java, have installed CCTV traffic monitoring systems at most signalized intersections to track vehicle movement in real time. However, two strategic junctions still lack camera coverage due to infrastructure constraints.

The Transportation Agency (Dishub) continues expanding surveillance across major roads to improve traffic management. Officials prioritize intersections with existing electricity and internet access. Therefore, most traffic lights in the regency now connect to the central monitoring system.

“Our goal is to equip every traffic light with CCTV. We choose locations where power and internet are already available,” said Farid Pandu Pradana, traffic management officer at the Blitar Transportation Agency.

Despite broad coverage, two intersections remain outside the system. They lie at the Ngrobyong four-way junction in Jiwut Village and the Tumpang junction in Tumpang Village. Both locations lack reliable internet connectivity.

“Almost all intersections already have CCTV except Ngrobyong and Tumpang. The main obstacle there is the absence of internet networks,” Farid said.

As a result, Dishub cannot yet install monitoring cameras at those sites. Officials plan installation once telecommunications infrastructure becomes available.

Installation and maintenance also present operational challenges. Technicians must share a skylift truck with the road equipment unit. Consequently, scheduling work at height requires coordination between teams.

Weather conditions further affect field operations. Crews halt installation when rain begins because electrical risks increase at height. Therefore, supervisors strictly prioritize worker safety during maintenance.

CCTV cameras allow officials to monitor congestion-prone intersections continuously. In addition, they provide data on general traffic flow across Blitar’s main roads. Consequently, Dishub can respond faster to disruptions or congestion.

With expanded camera coverage, authorities aim to improve traffic engineering decisions across the regency. Once remaining intersections gain connectivity, the monitoring network will cover all major traffic lights in Blitar.
