TULUNGAGUNG – A suspected heart attack killed a 61-year-old man at a coffee stall near Ngujang 2 Bridge in Tulungagung, East Java, on Wednesday morning (March 4). The victim, identified as Sugiyanto, lived in Ngletih Village, Kandat District, Kediri Regency.
The incident occurred in Pucung Lor Village, Ngantru District. Police received the report at around 8:30 a.m. after witnesses discovered the man unresponsive inside the stall.
According to information gathered at the scene, Sugiyanto arrived at the coffee stall on Tuesday evening (March 3) at about 7:00 p.m. At that time, heavy rain had soaked him before he reached the location.
After arriving, Sugiyanto asked the stall owner to prepare a cup of ginger milk to warm his body. However, shortly after drinking it, he began to feel unwell. He then complained of discomfort and started sweating heavily.
The stall owner tried to help him. For instance, she performed kerokan, a traditional Indonesian scraping therapy often used to treat cold symptoms. Nevertheless, Sugiyanto soon started vomiting and later fell asleep inside the stall.
Several hours later, at around 3:00 a.m., Sugiyanto woke up briefly. He then asked for warm sugar water because his condition felt worse.
Because she grew concerned, the stall owner asked another witness to search for medical help. However, by around 5:30 a.m., Sugiyanto still appeared asleep and continued snoring.
Soon afterward, the stall owner checked his condition more closely. At that moment, she realized he had stopped breathing.
Meanwhile, officers from Ngantru Police Station and the forensic identification unit of Tulungagung Police arrived at the scene and conducted an examination.
Ngantru Police Chief AKP Edy Santoso confirmed the findings. “Our initial examination at the scene found no signs of violence on the victim’s body. Therefore, we suspect the victim died from illness, most likely a heart attack,” he said.
In addition, the victim’s family explained that Sugiyanto had a history of high blood pressure.
After arriving at the scene, family members accepted the death as a natural tragedy. Therefore, they declined an autopsy and any further medical examination. They also signed an official statement confirming their refusal.
After authorities completed the procedures, the family transported the body by ambulance to Kediri Regency. They then prepared the funeral and burial at their hometown.
