TULUNGAGUNG – Sidomulyo Reservoir in Pagerwojo, Tulungagung, has transformed into a popular fishing destination and community recreation spot nearly a decade after authorities built it for agricultural irrigation.

Every afternoon, residents gather around the reservoir to fish, relax, and enjoy the cool atmosphere surrounding the area. The green landscape and steady water flow have made the reservoir one of the favorite outdoor locations for local communities.

People once viewed the reservoir only as irrigation infrastructure for rice fields in Sidomulyo. However, its role has expanded over the years as more residents began using the area for leisure activities and social gatherings.

Local resident Ika Putri said the reservoir still serves its original purpose of supporting agricultural irrigation in nearby farming areas.

“When authorities built it nine years ago, the reservoir mainly functioned to supply water for rice fields below Sidomulyo,” Ika said.

She explained that water from rivers in the highlands continues flowing into the reservoir every day. The constant water supply keeps conditions stable and supports fish populations inside the embung.

“Because the water source comes from rivers in the upper area, this place feels very comfortable for fishing activities,” she added.

Fishing activities usually become more crowded in the late afternoon. Residents often spend hours at the reservoir after finishing work or farming activities during the day.

Many visitors come not only for fishing but also to enjoy the peaceful environment. Families and young people often gather around the reservoir to socialize while enjoying the cooler air in Pagerwojo.

The atmosphere became even livelier last weekend when residents organized a large fishing competition at the reservoir. The event attracted participants and spectators from several surrounding areas.

Local resident Paini said the fishing festival created strong enthusiasm among the community. People crowded the edges of the reservoir from morning until evening to watch the competition.

“Last week, the village organized a fishing tournament here. The grand prizes included two goats and several attractive gifts,” Paini said.

According to residents, the event also helped introduce the tourism potential of Sidomulyo Village to a wider audience.

Community members believe the reservoir has strong potential to develop further as a low-cost tourism destination. They also see opportunities for small businesses and local vendors to benefit from increasing visitor numbers.

Paini said community activities at the reservoir prove that village infrastructure can provide broader economic and social benefits beyond agriculture.

She hopes local authorities and residents will continue maintaining the reservoir so it can support both irrigation and tourism activities in the future.

“We hope this place stays clean and well maintained. The irrigation system must continue working well, but community events should also continue because people really enjoy them,” she said.

Residents also expect more community-based programs and recreational events to take place at the reservoir in the coming years.

The growing popularity of the Sidomulyo Reservoir highlights how rural infrastructure can evolve into an important public space for recreation, tourism, and local interaction without losing its original agricultural function.
