TRENGGALEK – The Eid haircut tradition is increasing business at barbershops in Gandusari, Trenggalek, ahead of Idul Fitri. Many residents are visiting local barbers to improve their appearance before celebrating Lebaran with family.
Barbershop owners in the district say customer numbers have risen sharply over the past few days. Several shops now serve far more people than they do on ordinary days.
One local barbershop usually handles around 10 customers each day. As Eid approaches, that number has climbed to between 20 and 30 customers daily.
The increase has forced barbers to extend their working hours. Some shops now stay open much later to serve people waiting in line.
Andi S, a local barber, said this pattern appears every year before Eid. He explained that many people want a cleaner look before visiting relatives.
“On normal days, I usually serve around 10 people. Now it can reach 20 or even 30 customers a day,” said the 35-year-old barber.
He said his shop normally opens at midday and closes at 8 p.m. During the Eid season, however, he often works until 11 p.m.
“Usually we close at eight at night. But now we often continue until eleven because customers are still waiting,” he said.
Most customers arrive in the late afternoon or evening. Many come after work or after attending tarawih prayers during Ramadan.
For local residents, a haircut before Lebaran is part of the holiday tradition. It also marks preparation for family gatherings after a month of fasting.
Rudi, one of the customers, said he always cuts his hair before Eid. He wants to look fresher when meeting relatives.
“Before Lebaran, I always get a haircut first. It makes me feel more comfortable when visiting family,” he said.
The annual tradition also brings extra income to small barbershops in Gandusari during one of their busiest periods of the year.
