BLITAR – Brantas River crossing safety has become a top priority in Blitar Regency as transport officials intensify inspections at ferry docks ahead of the Eid holiday, when river traffic usually rises and water levels begin to climb.
The local transportation office increased monitoring at crossing points along the Brantas River to reduce travel risks for homebound passengers. Authorities expect stronger river currents during the holiday period, making safety checks more urgent.
Puguh Imam Susanto, head of the Blitar Regency Transportation Agency, said his office deployed transport inspectors to conduct random checks and field sampling at several river docks.
“We directly checked ferry readiness because the river level is rising. We also reminded operators to place passenger safety above everything else,” he said.
Inspection teams reviewed the operational condition of boats and checked emergency equipment carried on board. Officers focused on whether each vessel provided life jackets, lifebuoys, and fire extinguishers that passengers could quickly access during an emergency.
During the inspection, officers still found several boats with incomplete safety equipment. They immediately warned operators and asked them to fix the issue on site.
“We found one or two boats where equipment was incomplete, possibly misplaced after use. It may look minor, but these items are essential and must always stay ready,” Puguh said.
The transportation agency also continues to coordinate with Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) Probolinggo and provincial authorities to maintain ferry safety throughout the holiday season.
Officials said they will keep monitoring river crossings until the Eid return travel period ends, aiming to ensure safe travel for residents and visitors using river transport in Blitar.
