TRENGGALEK – The damaged condition of the Southern Cross Route, widely known as the JLS road, between Trenggalek and Tulungagung has raised growing safety concerns among motorists ahead of the upcoming long holiday season.
Several potholes have appeared along multiple sections of the road. The damage can be found on both sides of the busy coastal route. Motorcyclists are considered the most vulnerable, especially during nighttime travel when visibility becomes limited.
Local residents and road users are urging authorities to carry out immediate repairs. They fear the road condition could lead to traffic accidents if left untreated for a longer period.
The JLS road serves as one of the main transportation routes connecting tourist destinations in Trenggalek and Tulungagung. The road also provides access to Blitar and several popular beaches along the southern coastline of East Java.
“Repairs need to happen immediately,” said Cahyo, a local motorist who frequently uses the route.
He explained that the road was previously in good condition when traffic activity remained relatively low. However, the situation has changed in recent years as tourism activity along the southern coast continues to grow.
According to Cahyo, more tourists now visit beach destinations near the Indian Ocean. As a result, vehicle traffic has increased significantly, particularly during weekends and holiday periods.
The higher traffic volume has placed greater pressure on the road infrastructure. In addition, heavy trucks transporting construction materials have contributed to the deterioration of the asphalt surface.
Cahyo also noted that heavy rainfall has accelerated the damage. Water often enters cracked sections of the road and weakens the pavement. Landslide material near the roadside has also affected several parts of the route.
Drivers say the damaged road becomes more dangerous at night because street lighting remains limited in several areas. Many motorists currently rely only on vehicle headlights while traveling through the coastal corridor.
Road users are now calling for regular maintenance, including routine pothole patching and better roadside management. They believe proper maintenance would improve safety and provide greater comfort for travelers.
The JLS corridor remains one of the busiest coastal routes in southern East Java. The road attracts travelers because it offers direct access to beaches and panoramic views of the Indian Ocean.
Residents hope authorities will respond quickly to the growing complaints before holiday traffic increases further later this month.
