TRENGGALEK – Jalan Veteran Trenggalek damaged issue has resurfaced only 20 days after workers repaired the road, raising safety concerns ahead of Indonesia’s Eid homecoming season.

The damage appears near the Pasar Pon intersection in Trenggalek. Crews recently patched several deep potholes along Jalan Veteran. However, cracks and new holes have now formed in the same section.

Residents say the Public Works and Spatial Planning Office carried out repairs about three weeks ago. Workers filled large potholes and resurfaced part of the damaged lane.

“If I’m not mistaken, they repaired it around 20 days ago. The Public Works office handled it,” said Hendry, a local resident.

However, heavy truck traffic quickly weakened the patched surface. Hendry pointed to trucks transporting soil for the Sekolah Rakyat land-filling project as a key factor.

According to him, these trucks pass through the area daily. Many drivers choose Jalan Veteran because it offers a shorter route than the main road. In addition, some vehicles travel at relatively high speeds.

“They fixed it, but it didn’t last long. The trucks carrying soil for the SR project keep using this road,” Hendry said.

The constant weight and speed place repeated pressure on the aging road structure. Over time, the asphalt fails to withstand the load.

The timing has heightened public concern. Soon, thousands of travelers will cross Trenggalek during the annual mudik, or Eid homecoming migration.

Higher traffic volume could increase accident risks at the busy intersection. Therefore, residents are urging authorities to take stronger action.

Hendry believes the road’s foundation may no longer support continuous heavy loads. He called on officials to improve repair quality and regulate heavy vehicle routes.

“Perhaps the road structure can’t handle heavy trucks every day anymore,” he said.

For now, residents hope authorities respond quickly before the Eid travel rush begins.
