BLITAR – Vocational high school students (SMK) in Blitar continue to face difficulties finding local internships because the region still lacks enough industries to support practical training programs.

The shortage has forced many vocational high school students, known in Indonesia as SMK students, to seek internships outside Blitar and even beyond East Java. Schools say the situation affects students from several technical and professional majors.

Agus Supriyadi, Head of the Vocational School Division at the Blitar Regional Education Office, said internship placements must match each student’s field of study.

“Students, parents, and schools can help choose internship locations. However, the placement must remain relevant to the student’s major,” Agus said.

According to him, limited industrial opportunities inside Blitar prevent many students from securing suitable placements near home. As a result, students often look for companies in larger cities or industrial regions.

The condition has also created disagreements between students and parents. Many parents prefer internship locations close to home for safety and convenience reasons.

However, schools often find better opportunities outside the region. Officials therefore continue to educate parents about the importance of industry-relevant internships.

Agus explained that practical fieldwork plays an important role in preparing students for future employment. Because of that, schools must prioritize training quality over distance from home.

“Many internship opportunities that match student competencies exist outside the region,” he said.

The Blitar Education Office has encouraged vocational schools to expand partnerships with new industries and private companies. Officials hope wider cooperation can increase internship capacity and provide more choices for students.

Schools have also intensified communication with parents to reduce misunderstandings regarding internship placements. Educators want parents to understand that industry experience often matters more than location.

The regional government continues to promote stronger links between vocational education and the business sector. Officials believe stronger cooperation could help students gain practical skills before entering the workforce.

Agus said vocational internships should serve as real preparation for employment after graduation. He hopes companies will open more opportunities for students from Blitar in the future.

“We want internships to become valuable experience for students before they enter the job market,” Agus added.

The lack of local industries remains a long-term challenge for vocational education in Blitar. Nevertheless, schools continue searching for solutions to ensure students receive proper workplace training.
