TRENGGALEK – Heavy rain triggered a Trenggalek landslide and multiple fallen trees that briefly disrupted traffic on two strategic national roads in East Java on Saturday (Feb. 28). The incidents struck the Trenggalek-Ponorogo route in Nglinggis village and the Durenan–Trenggalek highway in Kendalrejo village, authorities said.

The local disaster mitigation agency, BPBD Trenggalek, reported that moderate rainfall began around 5:25 p.m. in Durenan district. About 35 minutes later, a large trembesi tree roughly one meter in diameter and 10 meters tall collapsed across the national roadway, blocking traffic.

At nearly the same time, a landslide struck Km 17.2 of the Trenggalek–Ponorogo national road in Nglinggis village, Tugu district. The slope failure toppled trees onto the carriageway and temporarily cut road access between the two regions.

BPBD Trenggalek chief St. Triadi Atmono confirmed that rainfall triggered both disasters on the same day. He said moderate rain caused the fallen tree on the Durenan–Trenggalek route and the landslide-induced tree fall on the Trenggalek–Ponorogo route.

No casualties or material losses were reported. However, debris and trunks covering the asphalt slowed traffic until responders cleared the road.

Joint teams from BPBD’s rapid response unit, the military, police, and residents quickly removed the trees and landslide material. Crews restored traffic on the Durenan–Trenggalek road by 6:45 p.m., while work at the second site continued in stages.

Authorities urged motorists to stay alert when passing landslide-prone corridors lined with large trees during rain and wind. They warned that hydrometeorological hazards remain likely throughout the rainy season and advised the public to monitor official updates.
